Personality: Jace is a born troublemaker. Alternating easily between being a charmer and a jackass, he only gets along with others when it suits his purposes or his mood. He doesn't like following orders, but he isn't inclined to be a leader; he's his own man. He will readily admit to being a complete bastard, but he isn't completely immoral either. When confronted with a serious, life or death situation he will almost always do the right thing. When confronted with everyday, non-serious situations, he will almost always do the wrong thing, just to piss people off. When he's in a good mood, he thinks everything is funny. Sarcastic and disrespectful, he amuses himself. It's easy to get on his bad side, and he's quick to start a fight. When he's in one of his darker moods it's best to just stay out of way.

Personal History: Jace was born in Tennessee. His parents were poor and prone to wandering. He frequently found himself in a different town every few months, or staying with various family friends or distant relations while one or both parents were absent, presumably off working or looking for work. In the times they were around, his parents were unreliable but affectionate and they each manage to have some lasting effect on their son. From his father he got his blue eyes, his short temper, and his love of Johnny Cash music. He credits his mother with his sly sense of humor and his unlikely affection for classic books. It was both of them that gave him his wandering feet and disinclination to follow rules.

Once Jace was old enough to drop out of school it was only natural that he hit the road and never stayed anywhere for very long. He made his way around the South and then the Central US. Luck, either good or bad, would have it that in 2018 he happened to be living just outside Denver, the center of the troubles.

When the virus hit, some people turned to stealing and looting to survive. Jace was way ahead of them; he lived by the rule of every man for himself long before civilization as they knew it fell apart. At 22 he was already an experienced thief and con-artist, taking what he wanted and generally enjoying the hell out of himself in the process. He had a knack for getting people to trust him and go along with his schemes. He found that most people were predictable and getting them to give him what he wanted wasn't that hard if he was just observant and patient. What he couldn't get with a clever story he'd find some other way to take, usually in the dark of night or with some sort of distraction.

He was in trouble with the law a few times, but no serious charges ever stuck. When he was 19 he did a two month stretch in the county jail, which taught him a profound moral lesson: don't get caught.

When the world started falling apart, Jace did the same thing he’d always done, took whatever he could. He looted his way from Pueblo to Casper, leaving stashes hidden or buried in remote locations. Some of the looters took what they personally desired at the time: TVs, stereos, game systems, jewelry, civilized items all quickly rendered completely useless. Jace was more discerning. He stashed away medicine, batteries, cigarettes, booze, drugs, porn, guns, and ammunition. Things that were small, easy to carry, and would be very valuable in the chaos that was to come.

In the aftermath he traveled from town to town, bartering his looted goods for food, shelter, and whatever other comforts he could come by. When things got too hot or he felt he'd worn out his welcome, he would leave and head for the next town, often stopping by a hidden cache on his way.

He's a useful guy. If there's something you want, odds are he has it, and if he doesn't, he'll know how to get it. People occasionally hire him to deliver messages or more mercenary type work. When asked what he does, he usually tells people that he's a problem solver.

Besides his stash, Jace also trades stories. When he wants to he can be quite charming and he's always been a good storyteller, so he provides entertainment to the often isolated tribes. He brings valuable news from town to town and tribe to tribe. Amazingly, some of the stories and news are even true.
